The auto-generated "congrats on 5 years!" ping is the fruitcake of workplace milestones. A real note — or an actual card for the big years — is rare enough to be memorable. Timing is easy: the day itself, or the Monday of that week.

Acknowledge it on the day or within that week. Unlike birthdays, a work anniversary noted three days late still counts.
Name a specific contribution: the project they carried, the mess they untangled, the way they onboard new people. "Congrats on X years" is a timestamp; specifics are a compliment.
Big round years (5, 10, 20) merit a physical card — mail it to arrive that week, or circulate one for the team to sign.
